My new toy – Eizo ColorEdge CG242W

In my article on Colour Management in photography here I mentioned and reasoned out why one should buy the best monitor that the budget permits.

I have been toying the idea of getting an Eizo LCD monitor which is reputed to be one of the best, if not the best, LCD monitors available in the market. I looked around and when the Eizo CG242W was announced the best LCD monitor at the XIX TIPA Awards, that tipped the balance. I went to a dealer to see for myself the quality of this monitor and was hooked immediately.

I thought my 24in iMac or even my Dell 2407WFP were good but the quality of this 24in Eizo really blew me away. The catch is, it comes at a price, and very steep at it when compared with the Dell or the Apple Cinema Display of the same size.

Here are some of the features of the Eizo ColorEdge CG242W:

1. It reproduces 97% of the AdobeRGB colour space.

2. The gamma level was adjusted at factory.

3. 16-Bit internal processing which produces true black and allows the lowest grayscale tones to be distinguished.

4. Non-fluctuations of brightness and colour using Digital Uniformity Equalizer (DUE).

5. 3D look-up table for accurate colour and grayscale rendering.

6. Simple and precise calibration using Eizo's own ColorNavigator software together with 3rd party monitor calibrators.

7. Hardware calibration that is independent of the graphics card.

8. 5 year warranty.

I have mentioned that I actually hated the new iMac's glossy screen that is not very conducive to proper calibration. Moreover I find its minimum white point of 120 cd/sq m to be too bright. Now with the Eizo, I can go to as low as 80cd/sq m! At that level of calibration, I find that I can look at the monitor without any strain which was what I felt while using the iMac and the Dell.

Another interesting point is that when placed side by side with the iMac and with both after calibration the colours that I get from the Eizo is really out of this world. No matter how I tweaked the iMac I was unable to get the same colours even remotely near that of the Eizo.

I must say that I am very pleased with my latest toy. Is it worth it? You bet!

I am in a similar situation and looking for the above or later eizo monitor.  Can the monitor be linked to the IMac as a second monitor and does the IMac's graphics card get the best out of the eizo monitor.
    Your help would be appreciated

    Many Thanks
