Today is officially my last day of my day job, same day as our nation's Merdeka (Independence) day hence it is a nice thought that the whole nation celebrates with me on this national holiday. Many have and will ask why at such a 'young' age (ok, I am not old enough to retire) that I optionally retire given that as a pediatrician my day job was decently lucrative. The keyword here is 'optionally' because after weighing all my options this, I believe, is the best for me.

This will mean I'll have more time for photography and more importantly, for the family as well. I plan to travel more on my own and if any of you are keen, I'll organize more photo-safaris and even workshops. Contact me if you want any group or one-on-one post-processing workshops, and watch this space for more announcements on photo-safaris and workshops.

I am back from Myanmar

Wow, what a trip! Despite the daily scorching heat (in the 40's) I really had a blast of a time. Shooting opportunities were aplenty, food was surprisingly good, hospitality was first class and the people were sooooo nice. What else can one ask for? OK, perhaps just better internet connections.

My 80G of hard disk space from My Epson P4500 photoviewer/storage device was not sufficient. In fact, near the end of my trip I had to delete so many files to accommodate the daily shoots that were going on. Next time I think I'll get myself a netbook coupled with an external hard disk to supplement my Epson to such trips. That combo will definitely come in handy.

So did I get photos that are worth sharing? I hope so. I have not processed much and when I have any worth sharing I'll definitely share them here. Please do come back to view them if you are interested. Well, I think you won't be disappointed….

More kids having fun

Don't you enjoy seeing the joy in their faces? That is what our lives should be. This photo was taken at a waterfall in the village of Bedulu, Bali. We chanced upon this group of boys having fun at the fall. I can still hear their laughter by looking at this photo. Always bring a smile to my face.

It is always nice to see kids having fun. Our guide prearranged this shoot for us at this water-spill around Klungkung, Bali. When we arrived the kids just appeared from the neighbouring houses. We were supposed to photograph them in better early morning light. Unfortunately some of the participants were hungry after the sunrise shoot at Kusamba fishing village and had to have breakfast. By that time the lighting was already a bit harsh for my liking. Anyhow we still had fun with the kids.

Ibu of Ubud market

Those who have been to the Ubud market in Bali would reconize this ibu – she runs a stall selling souvenirs at one of the sidelanes there. I make it a point to visit her each time I am there. I usually just chat with her but during the last visit in Jan 2010 I bought something from her. See how happy she was after that.

As part of the village tour we came to this waterfall where we met this group of children having fun. I climbed down to the riverbank, and while standing precariously (for my gears) on some rocks and shooting through some overhanging vines, I grabbed this hot. This shot reminded me of my more adventurous younger days. Boy, was it fun then!

Bali – here we come again!

Yes, we will be going to Bali this May 7th-11th again. I thought the last Bali photo-safari in Jan would be the last for a while but I just can't resist the draw of the Melasti festival.

To those who may not know the Melasti festival is an annual festival where the villagers purify their deities with water. This is the day when the villagers, dressed in their best, proceed in a procession towards a source of water which could be a holy spring or the sea. This year the Melasti falls on 10th of May for the village that we will be having our home-stay. The villagers will walk 14km towards the sea starting from 5am. Upon arrival at the beach the high priest prays and rings his small bells whilst the men carrying the deities rush the sacred figures into the water symbolically wahing them and thus purifying the statues.

I have planned an interesting itinerary around this festival specially for photographers.

Pak Sara’s grin

We met Pak Sara during the shoot of Pak Gulem at Bedulu village, Bali. Pak Sara actually came to watch the shoot and I was glad that he agreed to pose for us too.

Allow me to intorduce Pak Sara who was 90 yrs old.

Sunset fishermen of Bali

We were at Jimbaran fishing village on the evening of the 3rd day. The plan was to shoot the sunset and have a BBQ seafood dinner at one of the restaurants nearby. We had a blast of a time and so did the returning fishermen coming home after a bumper catch.
