A special portraiture post-processing workshop in Kuantan

'Special' because it is a special request by a photographer friend from Kuantan.

'Special' because we won't be shooting pretty models for a change.*

And 'special' because being a first of such workshops by me, I'll make it special.

(I prefer to do photo-safaris which I have successfully done quite a few.)

*We will be shooting everyday people in a fishing village in their natural environment.

Workshop details

Date : Saturday September 18th 2010

Time : 8.00am – 6.00pm

Format : Shoot at Tanjung Lumpur fishing village from 8.00am till noon

with lunch break followed by post-processing session from 2.00pm till 6.00pm.

Subjects : Elderly man, elderly woman and children in their environment.

Fees : Early bird offer RM660/pax till August 31st. RM760/pax thereafter.

Max of 15 participants.

Please also note that no refund will be entertained. You will have to find your own replacement.

Who should attend : Those into portrait and/or travel photography.

Things to bring : Beside your camera, please bring along your laptop for the post-processing session.

Software I will be using is Photoshop CS5.

What the Nikon 24mm/f1.4 can do

Without the Nikon 24mm/f1.4 I wouldn't have been able to capture this.

It was late evening. These monks from this monastery in Mandalay, Myanmar gathered to say their prayers before the meditation session. It was getting quite dark. I had to shoot wide open, increased the ISO to 6400 and still only achieved a shutter speed of 1/5s. Thank goodness I still have quite steady hands. Another friend who was with me grumbled that he couldn't capture anything despite having the D3 and the 17-35mm/2.8. I can now say that the 24mm is worth every cent that I paid for it.

Had a fun shoot with some friends yesterday. Unfortunately my tummy wasn't feeling too good and I had to excuse myself midway through it. This shoot was done at an abandoned school in Taman Desa, Kuala Lumpur. Here is one done in available light that I have processed so far on Susan (remember Goddess?). I simply love the lighting and hope you like it too.

I am pleased to announce that world famous available light portrait photographer Manuel Librodo will be coming to Kuala Lumpur this June 5th to share his expertise and experience at a full day workshop. Manuel or Manny, as he is often called, needs no further introduction. For those who may want to see some of his work and award winning photographs you may see them here.

Accompanying Manny to Kuala Lumpur will be Krystal Vee (photo in banner below), a model-cum-Hollywood actress from Bangkok. You can see her portfolio by Manny here.

Here is another play with the Render filter of Photoshop. I processed this photo in colour, converted it into black and white and played with the Render filter to modify the direction of the light. Here is the result:

We were at Jimbaran fishing village on the evening of the 3rd day. The plan was to shoot the sunset and have a BBQ seafood dinner at one of the restaurants nearby. We had a blast of a time and so did the returning fishermen coming home after a bumper catch.

Julia of Bangkok – a new form of post-processing

You have seen the results of the various techniques I frequently use in my post-processing. Today I would like to share with you a totally new technique which I thought is worth sharing. This involves the use of different blend modes, use of a monochrome image, play with Curves, Levels and Hue/Saturation all done to taste to achieve what I would like the result to be.

Allow me to introduce Julia, a model from Bangkok and a good friend of Krystal Virulchanya. This was taken last year in low available light (hence had to use ISO 800).
