I have been shooting a lot of Dian of late. The first was on July 3rd on a one-on-one workshop. Then came the Malacca workshop that I organised for Manuel Librodo and immediately after that, I had another one-on-one workshop on July 18th.
This series was taken on July 3rd – I finally have [...]
I will be giving a talk at Nikon Malaysia's 10th Anniversary celebration on the said date at Hall 3, Mid-valley Exhibition Centre, Mid-valley Megamall, Kuala Lumpur. It will be from 11:00 am till 1:00 pm. I have selected a topic that I am very passionate about which is Available Light Photography/Portraiture. So if any [...]
This shot was taken almost at the end of our workshop session. Light was getting harsh (almost lunch time) and I decided we use the reflected light from the floor to help light up Natacha's face. I used the shawls to frame her face and to help diffuse some of the light. One of [...]
This was taken during the days when I was still using the Nikon D2x. It is marvelous how technology has changed the way we take, and are able to take, shots that we would not have bothered to capture especially in dim available light photography. Our latitude has widened considerably since the introduction of [...]
This is for those of you who asked me if it is true that I only used available light for this series. Yes indeed, I only shoot in available light and have been doing so for a long time now. I have since 'banished' my flashguns to the drybox.
Here are a few [...]
…a double thumbs up! Srini, the one-on-one participant, was able to absorb all the technical jargon and my unique workflow that I threw at him. And he is one photographer who knew very little and was intimidated by the sight of the many options available in photoshop. Looking at the results of his own [...]
This is one of the many tricks I would use in available light photography especially when lighting is getting too harsh. This shot was taken in late morning and shows how expertly Kharu used the shawl to help diffuse the light.
Taken with Nikon D2x + Nikon 70-200mm VR1 @ f/3.2 1/400s [...]
The workshop started on the wrong note when our model Cay Kuijpers called in feeling unwell and needing an extra hour to rest it off. We were supposed to start at 8:30 am and not wanting to waste any time, I started with a discussion on available light photography, camera settings to use, the [...]
Those who have shot with me will know of my favourite red umbrella. I frequently use this as a backdrop and/or to diffuse harsh lighting. Here is an example.
Taken with Nikon D3 + Nikon 24-70mm @ f/3.2 1/320s ISO400.
This is another shot of Cay Kuijpers at the same sitting as the one shared here previously. I like how the leaves and shawls framed her face.
Shot with Nikon D3 + Nikon 24-70mm/2.8 Aperture Priority @ f/2.8 1/80s ISO200.
