Banhup Workshop with Nikon (Malaysia)

In collaboration with Nikon Malaysia and their Nikon Club, I will be having a 2-day portrait workshop on September 24th and 25th, 2011 specially for beginner-to-intermediate level photographers, or advanced photographers who would like to learn my style of available light photography and post-processing.

Here then are the details:

Theme : "Shooting with Available Light – People Photography" with Dr Teh Ban Hup

Venue : Nikon Centre Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia

Fee : RM580 (max of 15 participants)(something tells me this is being subsidized….)

Dates : Saturday September 24th 8:00 am to lunchtime (Photoshoot)

Sunday September 25th 9:00 am to lunchtime (Post-processing)

Participants : Open to Nikon users registered with Nikon Club Malaysia (You may register as a free member here).

What you will learn:

From the photoshoot

1. Camera settings for available light photography.

2. Required gears.

3. How to take more creative portraiture.

4. Understand ambient or available light and how to see the light.

5. How to pose and interact with the subject.

From the post-processing

1. Photoshop configuration.

2. RAW post-processing.

3. How to prepare the image for proper post-processing e.g skin treatment, skin smoothening, eye enhancement etc

4. How to make the image pop and more 3-D like.

5. Finishing touches.

At the end of the workshop, you are expected to learn how to capture and process with the following result.

Some portraits from my Kuantan post-processing workshop

These portraits were taken during the 2nd session of the photoshoot at Tanjung Lumpur fishing village. We must have met one of the friendliest group of villagers whose houses will sadly be demolished in the not too distant future to make way for development. Despite us disturbing their daily routine, we were served cold drinks and some Raya cookies. Let these captures be some documentation of a part of these wonderful people's history at Tg Lumpur.

Today is officially my last day of my day job, same day as our nation's Merdeka (Independence) day hence it is a nice thought that the whole nation celebrates with me on this national holiday. Many have and will ask why at such a 'young' age (ok, I am not old enough to retire) that I optionally retire given that as a pediatrician my day job was decently lucrative. The keyword here is 'optionally' because after weighing all my options this, I believe, is the best for me.

This will mean I'll have more time for photography and more importantly, for the family as well. I plan to travel more on my own and if any of you are keen, I'll organize more photo-safaris and even workshops. Contact me if you want any group or one-on-one post-processing workshops, and watch this space for more announcements on photo-safaris and workshops.

Time to 'rest'.

A 24mm/f1.4 portrait

This lens is well suited for environmental portraiture. Being a wide angle lens expect it to have some distortions if you do a close up as the following portrait will show. I personally have no problems with that as I have leant to live with some life's imperfections.

This portrait is of a 70+ yr-old gentleman who is the caretaker of the Nyaung Ohak (aka "Under the shade of the Banyan trees") ruins. He lives next to the ruins with his blind wife.

Taken with the Nikon 24mm/f1.4 Aperture Priority @f/3.2 1/160s ISO 200.

It is always nice to see kids having fun. Our guide prearranged this shoot for us at this water-spill around Klungkung, Bali. When we arrived the kids just appeared from the neighbouring houses. We were supposed to photograph them in better early morning light. Unfortunately some of the participants were hungry after the sunrise shoot at Kusamba fishing village and had to have breakfast. By that time the lighting was already a bit harsh for my liking. Anyhow we still had fun with the kids.

Here is one shot that I personally like.

Ibu of Ubud market

Those who have been to the Ubud market in Bali would reconize this ibu – she runs a stall selling souvenirs at one of the sidelanes there. I make it a point to visit her each time I am there. I usually just chat with her but during the last visit in Jan 2010 I bought something from her. See how happy she was after that.

Pak Sara’s grin

We met Pak Sara during the shoot of Pak Gulem at Bedulu village, Bali. Pak Sara actually came to watch the shoot and I was glad that he agreed to pose for us too.

Allow me to intorduce Pak Sara who was 90 yrs old.

Dancer from Bedulu

This is one of the many dancers that we had an opportunity to shoot "behind the scene" at our specially arranged tour of this village. I have more to share in the days to come. Pak Gulam of Bedulu Village

As part of our village photography tour we met Pak Gulam at Bedulu village at his home. He is 72 yrs old and presently lives alone after his only son got married and moved out. He still manages his farm nearby and keeps a fighting cockerel as a hobby.
