A recent workshop with Juria Hartmans

I recently had a one-on-one available light portraiture workshop with Sanjeev Verma, a very keen hobbyist from Singapore. Natacha Meunier was the planned model but due to some last minute unforeseen circumstances, Natacha could not make it and, being the professional that she is, she recommended her friend Juria Hartmans as a replacement. I initially felt a bit apprehensive but that feeling soon disappeared a few minutes into the photoshoot – Juria was excellent! Thank you Natacha for the recommendation, and Juria for the great shoot. Thanks must also be given to Sanjeev for being able to absorb the full day's proceedings like a sponge. He really made it easy for me to share.

"I came to KL to attend Dr Teh's workshop, with a mind that i already know quite a lot of technicalities and i had already bought Dr Teh's books …… so will there be something new to learn? Just one hour into the workshop and i knew that the trip has been the most transformational step in my photography. The way the shots are planned, the way the props are used, the way we interact with the model and the way the light is used, it made the whole shooting experience a fun, which is the prime reasons for us hobbyists to take photography. I did not realize the role of whole shooting experience, until Dr Teh showed the post processing
Its not a workshop of quick "tricks" or "how to" …… Its the whole experience of art. I am very glad that i met Banhup, who is not only a great photographer, but also a great artist and a great human being

The workshop finally came and went. It was a day for creativity to flow and flow it did especially from the enthusiastic participants.

I must thank all the participants for making life so easy for me as an instructor. Judging from the shots that the participants have sent me, I must say that I am more than impressed.

Special thanks must also be given to Thian Leong of Nikon Club and Nikon Malaysia for making this event possible.

What a workshop!

It was an interesting available light portraiture workshop indeed with so many new "experiences". Firstly, Burke Strickland flew all the way from Texas for this one-on-one workshop. Before that, the furthest among my participants were from Singapore.

Secondly, we have been planning this for a few months and on the evening of the workshop, I sprained my back…bad…while carrying the new tables I bought for my projector room. It was so bad that I couldn't sleep well the whole night because each time I turned, my low back muscles went into spasms. Ouch! The same ailment hampered my movements somewhat but when it comes to photography, the creative juice just flowed. The photoshoot went on without a hitch, safe for the occasional spasms of course. The lighting was absolutely gorgeous and so was our model, Natacha Meunier.

Thirdly, I used my new LCD projector for the first time for my one-on-one workshop. (I have used the same projector for my recent Bali photo-safari where I connected it the wrong way – I used the USB connection rather than the VGA cables resulting in less-than-satisfactory image quality. I have since learnt from that mistake). Prior to that, all my one-on-one post-processing sessions were done with my two-monitors + MacPro setup. Of course the image quality was superb but then the session would have to be done in my bedroom.

All in all, it was a fun and enjoyable day for me. I must thank Burke for taking the time to come all the way for this workshop. Burke, your self proclaimed 'basic' knowledge made it easy for me to share with you. I must also thank Natacha for being the ultimate professional and a good sport. Last but not least, I would like to thank Nigel Nj for his creations that made this shoot so inspiring.

The new editions of my eBooks are finally here!

Yes, finally, after many delays due to unforeseen circumstances. Making the decisions to add what needs to be added was tough. I eventually made the decision to give free updates instead. As it is, there are some refinement in my workflow, some new chapters including post-processing of environmental portraits & textures, a segment on available light photography, and many new photos to share.

Then, there was the proof-reading. When that was done, I had to learn a whole new (s2member) plug-in to help me do what I think is best for the readers. And when that was done, I had to test the system out for bugs. Seems to work like a charm!

I am talking about a membership system. Previously it was just sell the ebooks and let the readers explore on their own. I know the previous ebooks were quite easy reading and equally easy to follow. It was meant to be like leading the reader by the hand through my workflow. After that there was not much interaction between the readers and I.

These new ebooks again follow the same tested format but with a significant difference in approach; I now want to move a few steps further ahead by having the following:

1. Free Priority memberships for purchasers for 3-6 months whatever the case may be. (See Membership Options)

2. Give assignments and then discuss with the readers about their post-processing. The first assignment will start in early August.

3. Regular download of unprocessed photos (usually RAW format) from my own collection for post-processing exercises.

4. Free updates for an agreed period should I have any interesting new technique(s) to share (I am always exploring for new ones).

5. Download of Photoshop Actions whenever I have them (they are already some available at my Download Centre).

My main objective is that the readers won't see the last of me after the purchase; I will still be there to interact with them and guide them along. This is to make their 'investment' of my ebooks worthwhile.

I have recently started updating the ebooks with new techniques, new photos and even some new chapters. This time I will be illustrating my post-processing workflow with Photoshop CS5. If everything goes as planned these new editions will be ready within the next month or so.

I have yet to finish processing the photos from my last photo-safari to Bagan, Myanmar. With my busy traveling schedule (just returned from Gold Coast, Australia and will be off to Shantou, China tomorrow) I will have to procrastinate finishing the processing the rest. Today is officially my last day of my day job, same day as our nation's Merdeka (Independence) day hence it is a nice thought that the whole nation celebrates with me on this national holiday. Many have and will ask why at such a 'young' age (ok, I am not old enough to retire) that I optionally retire given that as a pediatrician my day job was decently lucrative. The keyword here is 'optionally' because after weighing all my options this, I believe, is the best for me.

This will mean I'll have more time for photography and more importantly, for the family as well. I plan to travel more on my own and if any of you are keen, I'll organize more photo-safaris and even workshops. Contact me if you want any group or one-on-one post-processing workshops, and watch this space for more announcements on photo-safaris and workshops.

Ebooks now available in print!

Due to some requests my ebooks are now available in print. I will be printing this on demand which unfortunately adds to the cost. To make it more affordable I have decided to subsidize the printing of these books.

The books are printed by Photobookmart. I have seen and gone through the quality of the printing and the binding, and must say that I am more than pleased with them. I am also more than satisfied with the efficiency of this company. As an indication, the book will be shipped out within one business day and depending on where you are, you should get your copy within 5 business days via DHL courier service.
